Talking A few questions about the comabt system...

I haven't played the game yet, but it looks amazing. Except the melee combat doesn't look to well. In most of the videos all I see is people standing in one spot casting or attacking. So here are the questions:
1. Are you able to block melee attacks?
2. Are you able to counter melee attacks?
3. Is there a combo system, or is it just one swing at a time?

If you have no clue what im asking...then I'll make a simple question: Will the combat in GW be like the combat in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within? or will it ever get close to that?

Combat in Guild Wars is fairly straight forward:

Select your target
Attack your target (with an attack, a skill, a spell, etc).

There is no button for "block" or "counter" per se, or some active blocking of attacks, etc. That being said, there are skills that help you dodge, evade, etc, and you can physically try to dodge/move out of the way of attacks.

Alright thanks for the reply . Just another quick thought, do you think they will ever add blocking/countering?

They do have blocking and countering, You just need to use specific skills.
(Ex: Riposte--Sword Counter, Shield Bash--Shield Block, Then counter (I think))

Not likely, they would have to completely revamp the combat system and there isn't any real demand for it anyways.

I'm far more then content on the way the combat sytem has turned out. Especially since it isn't a click-fest game like many others.

But there are a few skills that use countering. Look for them in the skills section on www.guildwarsguru.com

Thanks Auh, you were a little more articulate than I was in my first response. But having played Warrior Within, this is definitely NOT what itsmeee is asking about...

Alright now I'm happy to learn that there are AT LEAST skills that let you counter/block. But in my opinion...I don't really like seeing lots of people standing in one spot and hacking away at the enemy. I think that motion/moving around during head to head combat would be more fun . Actualy the game is already really fun, but I think it will be MORE fun with motion comabt. I would like to hear other opinions on this...

The PvP combat feels a lot more dynamic than in other 'click-and-forget' MMORPGs. As an online experience, you've compared it to something more like Counter-Strike. Can you explain that a little more?
We studied Counter-Strike a lot when we were laying out the initial design for Guild Wars, because we really wanted to capture that balance between team strategy and adrenalised combat. For that to be really successful, we knew we needed to give players freedom to dodge attacks. So, for instance, if you're about to throw a fireball at me I can dodge it if I'm quick enough. It's not a roll of the dice, it's a conscious decision. That adds a whole new element to our strategy. I can run to high ground if I'm an Archer, or I can hide behind things if I'm an Elementalist. Controlling your position and taking a more action-oriented role adds so much, but I wouldn't go as far as describing Guild Wars as a twitch game. It is, however, a very harmonious blend of action and strategy.

I move a ton in PVP but only a little in pve (when fighting) unless it gets hectic. And yes, it is action/rpg, not just a roll of the dice.

Yeah depending on how your style is You'll either be standing still for a bit, but never always. Although I know the combat is like hack and click when viewed by someone else, but when you're the one playing, especially in PvP. You are doing way too much and concentrating that you wouldn't even notice, but feel so rushed and adrenaline because the combat in Guildwars is not slow paced, but fast paced. Ah pvp is so nice in guildwars.

I found people to run around a lot in pvp, including myself - to the point where it's hard for me to make any build without both a sprint-type power and a snare-type power.

One of the best things about guild wars combat compared to most mmorpgs is that you never just miss unless your enemy makes you. There is some kind of counter for everything, limited only by your build choices and 8 power slots.

Interrupting spells is probably much like the system you were asking about - when they start casting, you hit your counterspell and stop it.

Melee attacks just sort of go off constantly, and you defend them either by cursing your attacker or using some kind of skill that dodges 75% of melee attacks for a short period.

ok in answer to your question...No this is not like the MxO combat System...its more of a cross between Diablo+EQ2 but slightly more advanced in a sense.

hope that helped

Yes, In my experience as a warrior I do move around a lot. Just not when fighting other Warriors. I move to dodge an arrow, A catapult, A firebolt, etc. I run away when I'm hurt and getting no monk-love. I chase down enemy casters and archers and hit 'em with Bull's Strike to knock them down. I run out of an area to avoid Meteor Storm, Or Fire Storm. I run like crazy to transport the flag.
These are not all the things you can run for... That's just the general idea for a warrior. That's PvP, GvG.

But, There is a lot less movement in PvE. There is still enough for me not to pay much attention to it though, and still enjoy the game.

1) you can block attacks by using certain skills that are known as stances. things such as Whirling Defense.

2) Yes. Using the above methods. You can also blind your enemies using certain skills to make it so that they miss most of the time. It is possible to dodge projectile attacks such as arrows by moving irratically back and forth and having good luck.

3) 1 swing at a time. Click opponent. You start attacking. Click skills, you use the skills.

I'm migrating over from WoW. Before WoW I played SB. I can't stand WoW. As I read posts in threads like these and look over pages of GW info, I am very excited about the release. This game sounds like a dream come true.
